Tapeworms are most common in adult cats. The cat ingests a flea while grooming; the flea has a tapeworm inside it. Outdoor cats may contract these cat parasites by eating raw flesh from prey such as small animals or fish.
Brush your dog's hair, spraying on a detangler if necessary. Keeping the hair evenly distributed will allow it to provide maximum protection from the sun. If it becomes matted, trying to brush it out will be too painful and mats will have to be cut out.
Frontline for dogs is more effective than these older methods. The Frontline for dogs lasts up to three months. It kills all stage of flea development, from flea eggs, to flea larvae, to adult fleas. And some of the Frontline for dogs products even address the issue of ticks. Toxins in the home are a major contributor to seizures in dogs. Most floor polishes and cleaners contain chemicals that can be harmful to your dog. Flea and tick collars are also full of chemicals and are not recommended. When you clean your home make sure it is well ventilated and keep the dog away until any fumes have dissipated.
Depending on the symptoms and how well you know your cat, you may be able to look after it at home. A flea infestation doesn't require a trip to the vet, just some natural flea remedy available from your pet shop, the vet or your supermarket.
Unfortunately accidents will happen with inquisitive cats. It may be that your cat escaped outdoors where it was hit by a car, got into a fight with another cat or dog or ate a poison bait or even snail pellets in your garden. And not all accidents happen outside the home. Your cat could eat the leaves of a pot plant such as the tomato which will make it very sick. Chocolate is a definite no-no for cats. Apart from being too nice to share or to feed to pets, chocolate will kill your cat. So keep those precious supplies of your favourite snack food well away from children, partners and your cat. Some human foods will also make your cat very sick so please, don't feed it your left over scraps or allow it to lick your plate clean.
That being said, scratching incessantly can also mean that your furry, feathered, or scaled friend has a skin problem, such as an allergy, that can make its life - as well as yours - terribly uncomfortable. If there are no signs of fleas, try to analyze anything in the pet's environment that has changed just before the scratching started. It may be something as simple as washing the bedding in a different soap. If nothing comes readily to mind, please take your pet to the veterinarian to make sure that the itching is not contagious so that you can get some relief for the poor, scratching animal!
A fourth kind of house pests are the fleas. House infestation by fleas is caused by equally infested pets. Common breeding areas of fleas are carpets that are near the exterior doors. Actually all places where pets have access are attractive places for the fleas. Thus, keeping your pets free from flea dogs is also keeping your house from flea infestation.
